Michele Giuttari - Interview on The Australian - 22 January 2004

On 22 January 2004 the newspaper La Repubblica published the following interview with Dr.. Michele Giuttari.

Why did you started writing?
The idea came to me in '98 after the sentence to fellow snacks. I felt the strong impulse to tell this story and especially the method of investigation to realize that we followed the hypothesis that these crimes fossero opera non di un killer solitario, ma di un gruppo di assassini.
In Scarabeo c'è una parte tecnica in cui parla il poliziotto, l'uomo concreto who knows how to work the investigation, the importance of informants, caution in linking of the facts without evidence. At the same time the background is the story of the monster that takes up his life for so long. Difficult to distinguish fact from fiction.
Giuttari The investigator uses a lot of the brain, as a cop in real life. But it is also clear that the experience of Monster I scored and I scored again. The writer, even though it retains the references in the background, is forced to mention them.
In the book she describes Florence speaking of her beauty, its history and then raconte of those closed doors behind which crimes were born, the intrigues of power for centuries. Is there really This dark side of the city or is it a literary artifricio?
This is a face of Florence, first as a writer, he struck me as an investigator. This is a city that even before the Monster has seen heinous crimes. But then there is a hidden face, the Arno flowing takes away the dirty water, but not mysteries. The investigator will ask: why?
has given an answer?
This is a question too difficult.
you do tell her that every player remains unsolved crime in the city's memory forever. It 'really?
The people of Florence, normal people honest, knows there is a murderess, or more than one, in freedom and this marks them thinking. This cop should think about. Solving a crime is a duty towards the community, the investigator must love the truth strongly.
He never fear that his work is an obsession, becoming paranoid?
No. I am a very practical man, who is down to earth, always looking the facts. I know myself very well, I have never had signs to that effect.
Since she is a practical man, the latest developments of the investigation are real?
'll answer with acts that are public. The judges who condemned Pacciani and fellow snacks write that on the basis of that process are no elements that lead to the presence of a client. And then ask the prosecutor to investigate.
you feel close to the truth?
The engine that drives an investigator must be a strong love for the truth. And I've got. For the full truth, not half truths.
